HEAVENS TEA, A SACRED TEA SCHOOL. PORTLAND, OREGON

“Pour me into a cup, let me pass through your lips, let me wash over your heart”

Heavens Tea: the name of this company refers to the fact that tea is sacred, a gift of grace to man and that with it he can transcend the mundane world. Cha Dao (The Way of Tea) and good quality tea such as aged puerh, can bring us into deeper contact with our essential selves, our world and the heavens.

Tea has the ablity to calm us, open us and to shift us into a higher place within ourselves. Tea has a way of connecting us to nature, our friends, our community and to our own lives. Tea is a gift from nature, given to humans, to help them become part of the deeper harmonies of life. All tea used at my tea school is handled, stored and treated with respect. This business is a work of love for me and every aspect of it is treated with respect, devotion and care; I wish to pass this tea spirit on to others.

I have a huge passion for tea; drinking tea, smelling tea, listening to tea, learning its secrets and serving tea to to others. My tea school grew out of my love for the art of tea, which at its core is a spiritual art: an art which has at heart the goal of bringing people into contact with their basic humanity and divinity. My goal in these tastings is to introduce and educate people about the beauty, power and grace one can experience through this mode of expression. Real Cha Dao is about opening and bringing people into the sublime beauty and specialness which penetrates every momet. Tea is a perfect vehicle for giving people a deeper experience of themselves, their environment and the mysteries of nature.

The teas I use are very speical. The highest level of teas are those which contain real life force or “chi” as it is known in Eastern Medicine. Puerh teas, aged oolongs and other teas of high quality have the ability to shift people into deeper and more expansive states. My hope is that these tasting will show people the possibilities inherent in the tea experience and allow them to study tea further ( and endlessly) on their own. For tea is an art and any real art has no boundries and no end point. Art teaches you endlessly as you practice it.

Studying tea is a constantly unfolding learning process. One thing any true tea person knows is that there is always someone who knows more. I am hoping this business will allow to me deepen my studies of tea, come in contact with others with this passion and to spend more time in Asia seeking out traditonal and native tea cultures before they dissapear. We are only alive when we are learning and my wish is to always further my depth of knowledge about tea, spirit and life and pass it on to others.

This business is culmination of studying tea, Asian art and Eastern spirituality for three decades. When I was younger, I lived in a yogic monastery with a meditation master for 15 years. There I learned to appreciate and explore the more subtle states available to humans. Tea is my vehicle for sharing this experience with others. I have also studied, collected and sold Asian art for twenty years. My specialty is Himalayan Buddhist and Hindu art. In 2001 I was a visiting curator at the Portland Museum of Art for an exhibit of rare early Tibetan Art hosted in honor of the Dalai Lama’s visit to Portland.
